Google Adwords is the name of Google’s paid search results program. By bidding on certain keywords, a business can have a small text ad appear when a user executes a search with those keywords on Google.
There are several attractive aspects of advertising through the Adwords program:
- Google Gets a Lot of Traffic. Google gets a ton of traffic everyday and is by far the most popular search engine with close to 65-70% of all searches.
- Adwords is Very Targetted. If you advertise in a newspaper, on tv or on radio, only a small percentage of the people that see your ad will be interested in the type of product or service you are selling. If a user types in “Vermont web designer”, chances are that they are actually looking to find someone to do web design for them, so an ad that appears with that search is much more targeted and effective.
- You Only Pay if Someone is Interested. When your ad shows, you’re only charged the amount you bid if a user clicks on the ad. If the user does not click on the ad, you still get the free potential exposure of having your name pop-up.
